San Jose, CA (Apr. 12, 2006) – The San Jose Sharks have come together with the Pat Tillman Foundation to present the inaugural San Jose Pat's Run. The Sharks have joined an impressive list of community sponsors for the April 30 event including KBAY 94.5 FM and KEZR Mix 106.5 FM.
"The Sharks are such an integral part of the community in San Jose, it's great that they have joined KBAY and Mix 106.5 to sponsor Pat's Run," said Alex Garwood, executive director of the Pat Tillman Foundation and Pat's brother-in-law. "The foundation is very passionate about our community, and the hands-on involvement of our sponsors helps us make a positive difference in celebration of Pat."
The event celebrates the life of Pat Tillman, a scholar-athlete who first became known through his academic achievements and accomplishments as a football player for Arizona State University (ASU) and the Arizona Cardinals. Pat graduated in three and a half years with a 3.97 grade-point average before being drafted by the Cardinals. His dominating defensive play resulted in a multi-million-dollar NFL contract, which he gave up to serve his country after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. People throughout the world mourned his 2004 death in Afghanistan.
"The Sharks are honored to be a part of this extraordinary community event," said Greg Jamison, president and chief executive officer of the San Jose Sharks. "Pat Tillman embodied the spirit of a true hero and we are proud to support his legacy."
Pat's Run offers a chance for everyone to take action in Pat's name by running or walking 4.2 miles. On April 30 the course will wind through the neighborhoods surrounding Leland High School where Pat grew up. It ends on the 42-yard line of Pat Tillman Stadium at Leland High School. Participants eight-years-old and younger can test themselves in the .42-mile Kids' Fun Run. All the distances commemorate the number 42; the number Pat wore during his days at Leland and ASU. To register visit www.patsrun.com; otherwise, contact The Running Revolution, 511 E. Campbell Ave., Campbell, at 408-374-9307. Registration cost starts at $25.
Proceeds from Pat's Run will benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation and its Leadership Through Action™ Initiative at ASU. Leadership Through Action™ is the focus of the foundation's mission of creating responsible, civic-minded leaders in Tillman's mold. Each year, officials from the Foundation and ASU select up to 15 Tillman Scholars to participate in the program.
