Tempe, AZ (April 15, 2006) – The Pat Tillman Foundation announced today that more than 10,000 came out to show their support for Pat Tillman at the second annual Pat's Run in Tempe. Through corporate and community sponsorship, along with participant entry fees, the run raised well over $350,000 that will benefit the foundation's Leadership Through Action™ Initiative based at Arizona State University (ASU).
"We're extremely happy about the number of people who came out to Pat's Run to show their support for Pat. We had over 6,000 participate in last year's run, and are amazed by how much it has grown in only a year," said Alex Garwood, executive director of the Pat Tillman Foundation and Pat's brother-in-law. "This event truly demonstrates the power of Pat."
Pat's Run was created to celebrate the life of Pat Tillman, a scholar-athlete who first earned the nation's respect through his academic achievements and accomplishments as a football player for the Arizona Cardinals and ASU and later for his service to our country after the Sept. 11 attacks. The run is inclusive of runners and non-runners alike with a 4.2-mile run/walk and a .42-mile kids' run. All distances commemorate the number 42, which Pat wore during his days as a Sun Devil at ASU.
The foundation is expanding the run this year to include Pat's hometown of San Jose, Calif. On April 30 the run will wind through the neighborhoods surrounding Leland High School, Pat's former school, and will end on the 42-yard line of the newly renamed Pat Tillman Stadium.
