Ronnie Lott lines up for Team Tillman

NFL Hall of Fame player recruiting pro athletes to raise funds

San Jose, CA (Aug. 24, 2005) – The Pat Tillman Foundation has named former San Francisco ‘49er and NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott honorary captain of its new Team Tillman plan.

Lott's mission is recruiting professional athletes to pledge donations for their achievements on the field, ice or court. So far, his team is already loaded with some of Tillman's former teammates; with the addition of Phoenix Coyotes center Mike Ricci, it already expanded beyond the gridiron.

Coaches are also participating, and Team Tillman is seeking community sponsors and individuals to contribute. Community sponsors can match their local athlete dollar-for-dollar, and fans can pledge for their favorite athlete's accomplishments. To learn more about how to participate, visit the Team Tillman page at http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org/get_involved_team.htm on the Internet.

"When I think of Pat Tillman, I think of someone who honored the things he believed in," Lott said. "He's a great example for every person to follow, and I know that's why we've had such great interest from athletes to be part of Team Tillman."

The following coaches and athletes are participating:

  • Jake Plummer (QB, Broncos, $1000 per TD)
  • Derek Smith (LB, ‘49ers, $100 per tackle)
  • Scott Player (Punter, Cardinals, $100 per punt inside the 20)
  • Dave McGinnis (Linebacker Coach, Titans, $100 per turnover)
  • Larry Marmie, (Defensive coordinator, Rams, $100 per turnover)

Tiki Barber of the New York Giants, kicker Joe Gedny of the ‘49ers, Larry Izzo of New England Patriots and Mike Ricci of the Phoenix Coyotes NHL team will also participate in the 2005-06 season.

Proceeds from Team Tillman benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation and its Leadership Through Action™ Initiative. Leadership Through Action™ is the focus of the foundation's mission of creating responsible, civic-minded leaders in Tillman's mold. The Tillman family recognized the impact he had on the country and wanted to create a lasting legacy for people inspired by his actions. The first group of Tillman Scholars started the program at Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business in the Fall of 2005.
